They have never ever released a single note, studio or live, form the archives, so it would be more surprising if something actually came out. But "Pressure" is a song that everyone, inluding the most casual of casual fans, will recognize I guess, so a good way to get things going. They have actually sometimes gone back to "Thunderbird" as opener, and also "I Thank You" (their early 80s opener), for some tours in more recent years. This audience recording is of a show that is pretty close in both time and content. The song which is called "Rain at Home" is actually a cover of "I Feel So Bad" (Chuck Willis), and where it says "Goin' Down to Mexico" it is probably a cover of "Going Down" (Don Nix) that leads into "La Grange". It has been reported by people who were along on this tour that the wall of speakers behind him are dummys and his sound is a small mic'ed up combo, some say a Mesa/Boogie and some say a small Fender tweed. I have problems listening to this show because of his bleeting and farting guitar tone. It's "nasty" like in it's awful, sounds like something's broken. "Waitin' For The Bus"/"Jesus Just Left Chicago" on Tres Hombres and "Jailhouse Rock"/"Tush" on Fandango! are from Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 1980, while "La Grange" on Tres Hombres and probably "Heard It On The X" on Fandango! are from the PinkPop Festival, Geleen, Netherlands, 1982. My point with the above being that something like this should have come out instead of The Best Of ZZ Top, as a stop-gap release in 1977. I made a post to that effect in the album-by-album thread: I think if you scrutinize it you will find the vocals of other songs are also pre-recorded, although they don't use the tracks from the studio versions. Yes, Billy has never sung it live, he probably could not adequately reproduce the falsetto in a live situation, and they couldn't very well skip their biggest hit in concert, so it has always been pre-recorded. A very distant second would be the show from Capitol Theatre, Passaic, 1980, which being recorded for radio and probably mixed on the fly (or at least without multis preserved for later remixing) is what it is. The only quality live recording of ZZ Top is what's on the live side of Fandango!, I'm afraid.
